Ingredients
1 lb chicken breast, cut into bite-sized chunks
1 cup heavy whipping cream
2 tbsp butter
1.5 tbsp tomato paste
1.5 tsp turmeric powder
3/4 tsp chili powder
2 cloves garlic, diced
1/4 medium onion, diced
1 tsp ground ginger
1 tsp pink salt
1/2 tsp ground cinnamo
Directions
- In a bowl, combine turmeric, ginger, salt, chili powder and cinnamon. Coat the chicken thoroughly with the mixture. Set aside.
- Melt the butter in a skillet over medium heat. Add in diced onion and garlic. Stir frequently for 2-3 minutes until the onions are translucent and fragrant.
- Increase the heat to medium-high and add the chicken. Cook for about 3-5 minutes until the chicken almost entirely cooked.
- Add heavy whipping cream and tomato paste in the skillet. Stir with a spatula until the paste and cream are well blended. Turn the heat to medium-low and cover with a lid for 5-7 minutes.
- Remove lid and combine. Season to taste if needed. If you like a thicker curry sauce, allow it to reduce with the lid off until it reaches the consistency you like.
- Serve right away over cauliflower rice.
Notes
- If you do not eat up all the butter chicken at a time, store it in a sealed container for up to 10 days in the fridge and 2 months in the freezer.
FAQ
Is Keto Butter Chicken suitable for a ketogenic diet?
Yes. This recipe is designed for keto and low-carb diets, using chicken, butter, heavy cream, and spices while avoiding sugar and high-carb ingredients commonly found in traditional butter chicken.
Does this Keto Butter Chicken taste like traditional butter chicken?
It delivers a very similar rich, creamy, and aromatic flavor. While it uses fewer tomatoes and no sugar, the spices, butter, and cream recreate the classic butter chicken experience.
Why is tomato paste used instead of tomato sauce?
Tomato paste provides concentrated flavor with fewer carbs than tomato sauce. Using a small amount keeps the dish keto-friendly while adding color and depth.
Can I use chicken thighs instead of chicken breast?
Yes. Boneless, skinless chicken thighs work very well and often result in a juicier dish due to their higher fat content.
Is this recipe spicy?
The spice level is mild to moderate. You can easily adjust the heat by increasing or reducing the chili powder according to your preference.
Can I make this recipe dairy-free?
This recipe relies heavily on butter and heavy cream for its signature texture and flavor. Dairy-free substitutions can be used, but the taste and consistency will change.
Is this butter chicken suitable for meal prep?
Yes. Keto Butter Chicken stores well and often tastes even better the next day as the flavors continue to develop.
How should leftovers be stored?
Leftovers should be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator and consumed within 3–4 days. Reheat gently on the stovetop or microwave.
Can this dish be frozen?
Yes. It can be frozen for up to one month. Thaw in the refrigerator overnight and reheat slowly, stirring well to restore the creamy sauce.
What should I serve with Keto Butter Chicken?
It pairs best with cauliflower rice, zucchini noodles, or sautéed low-carb vegetables to keep the meal fully keto-compliant.
